About Me
derek@storyorchard.media
Award-winning Strategic Storyteller and Communications Specialist with over 14 years of global experience in developing actionable marketing and communications strategies, and producing impactful content.
Recent Projects
Most of my work occurs behind the scenes – developing short and long term marketing strategies and communications plans designed to address business challenges and work toward organizational goals. However, I also execute on those plans, producing materials, collateral, and content, examples of which you will find throughout the page below.
Work Experience
April 2024 - Present
Director, Marketing + Communications
Bishops Bay Country Club - Madison, WI
I was brought in as the first Director of Marketing and Communications in Bishops Bay’s history. A large part of my role has been to learn the company’s culture and develop a communications strategy aimed at bringing clarity, consistency, and stability for both the Staff and Members. I have had an opportunity to produce a significant amount of content and communications for everything from events promotions and highlights, to designing strategic plans and survey results documents to help Members better understand what is happening at their Club, to Board updates and communications videos.
Notable work:
Long term communications plan: I developed a 35-page, long term communications plan for the Club based on my experiences here this summer and the feedback I received from Members and Staff. A big part of this plan was developing, building, launching, and populating a weekly blog, which you can visit at www.bishopsbay.club.
Boost in engagement: I have implemented a new, media-focused content and promotions strategy, which has led to increased Social Media activity and engagement not only within the Club community, but beyond on platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram.
2011 - Present
Owner, Strategic Storyteller
Story Orchard
Story Orchard is my freelance business, which I’ve operated since 2011. Notable clients include AIG, ESPN, Ronald McDonald House Charities, KitKat, and a number of smaller businesses, startups, and individuals. Running a business has taught me a lot about resource management, how to anticipate and plan for future growth, and the importance of organizing the way you approach your work internally to better set yourself and your clients up for success.
Notable work:
Ronald McDonald House Charities Madison: In 2024 I worked with the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Madison, Wisconsin to develop a campaign and video for fundraising and year end communications called A Place To Be. You can watch the video above.
AIG: I developed and produced a series of animated internal communications pieces for AIG’s UK offices geared toward positive changes in thinking for sales staff.
October 2022 – December 2023
Assistant Vice President, Marketing + Communications
Earlham College – Richmond, IN
At Earlham College, I had the opportunity to lead, mentor–and learn from–a young and brilliant team of Copywriters, Graphic Designers, Video Producers, and Social Media Managers.
Notable work:
A push to modernize: Higher education tends to be two to three years behind the rest of the world when it comes to marketing, and Earlham was two to three years behind the rest of higher ed. I pushed for modernizing marketing and communications efforts, with a greater focus on Social Media, digital marketing, and brand development.
A focus on planning and proactiveness: When I joined Earlham, no formal marketing or communications processes existed. I worked with our Project Manager, Kathryn Kouns, to document our department’s efforts and output to establish processes to better evaluate performance and more efficiently prioritize resource allocation.
April 2021 – September 2022
Video Producer + Communications Specialist
Elanco Animal Health – Indianapolis, IN
During my time at Elanco I had the privilege of working closely with Elanco’s CEO Jeff Simmons and the entire executive leadership team. I also learned a lot about corporate communications from Colleen Decker and Keri McGrath, who showed me what it took to approach internal and external corporate communications both holistically and ambitiously within the Animal Health space and beyond.
Notable work:
Elanco 4 Me: I spearheaded developing and launching Elanco’s biggest internal communications initiative in company history, which I called Elanco 4 Me. Elanco 4 Me included podcasts, employee spotlight content such as posters and cards, videos, Social content, and more.
CEO Strategic Communications: I traveled with CEO Jeff Simmons and CMO Dave Urbanek as they visited and toured manufacturing facilities in Maine, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, producing educational and promotional video and written communications each day to be distributed internally.
Multicultural Summit and Global Day of Purpose: I was on the planning committees for Elanco’s Multicultural Summit and Global Day of Purpose.
November 2013 – March 2021
Media Producer + Brand Strategist
IronGate Creative – Hagerstown, IN
At IronGate Creative, I not only learned about Marketing and Communications from owners Jeff Huffine and Jeff Richards, but also about integrity. I had the pleasure of working with national clients such as the Lumina Foundation and Red Gold Tomatoes, regional powerhouses Franciscan Health, First Bank Richmond, the Wayne County Economic Development Corporation, and Reid Health, as well as a lot of small-but-mighty local businesses.
Notable work:
Home in Wayne: I developed a long term, multifaceted talent attraction and promotional campaign for Wayne County, Indiana for the Wayne County Economic Development Corporation called Home in Wayne.
EverHeart Hospice: I conducted brand research, led focus groups, conducted interviews with strategic partners, and led a committee in renaming and rebranding EverHeart Hospice, formerly State of the Heart Care.
First Bank Richmond: I developed and produced content for First Bank’s I Love My Bank campaign.
